September is Hunger Action Month 2025: Unite, Act, Make a Difference
Every September, communities across the United States come together for Hunger Action Month—a powerful, nationwide initiative to fight food insecurity and to stand in solidarity with millions facing daily hunger. In 2025, Hunger Action Month runs from September 1 to September 30, with Orange Day, the national day of awareness, taking place on Friday, September 5, 2025.
Why Hunger Action Month Matters
Hunger doesn’t always look the way we expect. It may be a child going to school without breakfast or a senior skipping meals to afford medication.Today over 733 million people around the world go hungry every day (World Food Programme). In the U.S., tens of millions still struggle with food insecurity (USDA Food Security Data), making this month more urgent than ever. Hunger Action Month reminds us that empathy and action can create real change.
7 Ways to Take Action This September

Whether you’re an individual, a business leader, or a community organizer, your involvement can make a real impact. Here are some inspiring ways to get engaged:
Sponsor a School Breakfast: Partner with local schools to fund meals for students throughout the month to help ensure every student starts the day with the fuel they need to learn and grow..
Host a Food Drive: Organize a collection at your workplace, community center, or school. Consider department-vs-department challenges, themed collection weeks, or adopt-a-family meal kits.
Volunteer Your Time: Spend a few hours at your local food bank or sign up for group volunteering events with colleagues, friends, or family. Examples include Second Harvest Triangle or Second Harvest Food Bank of Metrolina
Advocate for Change: Use your voice, write to elected officials urging them to make hunger a priority, share hunger facts on social media, and use your voice to push for policies that prioritize food security.
Donate Financially: Even a small recurring gift can help ensure food banks have the resources to meet growing needs.
Raise Awareness: Wear orange, decorate your office, or set up an “Empty Plate” display to spark conversations and reflection.
Virtual Engagement: North Carolina residents can organize online hunger-relief fundraisers, host virtual trivia nights, or sign up for virtual volunteer opportunities through local food banks and statewide engagement hubs. Explore resources at Food Bank of Central & Eastern NC, Second Harvest, MANNA FoodBank, and VolunteerNC to start a virtual project or event this fall.
Sponsor a School Breakfast: Partner with local schools to fund meals for students throughout the month to help ensure every student starts the day with the fuel they need to learn and grow.
